Find Mentions of Your Brand

Frequently Asked Questions

Overview

Your SEO strategy may involve monitoring when and how people are talking about your brand. Finding mentions of your brand that don’t include links to your site can offer insight into your overall brand awareness and provide link building opportunities.

In this guide we will walk through how to use the Moz Pro tools to track down mentions of your brand that don’t have links, as well as the reporting options available, so you’re able to keep key stakeholders in the loop.

Mentions in Keyword Explorer

Within Keyword Explorer, you can review recent mentions of a keyword you’re researching in the Mentions module of the Keyword Overview.

To get started with reviewing mentions for your brand, head to Keyword Explorer and enter a branded keyword (like your brand name) in the search box. After clicking Analyze, scroll down to the Mentions modules. Here you’ll see a list of recent mentions of the keyword you queried with the mentioning page titles and URLs noted. Click the links provided to see the pages themselves.

The date the mention was found and the Mention Authority will be noted for each. Mention Authority predicts the authority of the page on which the mention was found using a proprietary algorithm along with a combination of Moz metrics that take both the authority and influence of the page into account.

Once you’ve identified which of these links are mentions of your brand that you may want to explore further or pursue for link opportunities, you can add them to a Link Tracking List. Link Tracking Lists in Link Explorer offer a way to keep track of your link building efforts all in one place.

Opportunities in Links

Within the Opportunities section of Links within your Campaign, we will use your designated Brand Rules to find mentions of your brand that don’t currently link to your tracked site.

For each mention, the tool will note the root domain as well as the mentioning page’s title and URL. If you’d like to view the page itself, you can click the URL provided.

In addition, you will see which Brand Rule is specifically being mentioned. This functionality allows you to better sort through your unlinked mentions if you have multiple Brand Rules designated. Using multiple Brand Rules can help to get a more complete picture of your mentions. For example, if you have a branded product, you can set up a Brand Rule for the name of that product line to ensure those unlinked mentions are also captured.

If you need to update the Brand Rules associated with your Campaign, you can do so via your Campaign Settings at any time.

Reporting Options

Link Tracking Lists

Link Tracking Lists in Link Explorer offer the ability to keep track of your link building efforts in one place. Once you’ve identified unlinked mentions you’d like to include in your link building efforts, you can create a Link Tracking List for those mentions.

To get started, head to Link Explorer and click on Link Tracking Lists in the left-hand navigation menu. You can then either add your links to an existing list or create a new list.

Once links have been added to a list, you can then add notes and export the list to a CSV to share with colleagues or clients.

Custom Reports

With the Custom Reports feature in Moz Pro Campaigns, you can set up a report including your Link Opportunities to automatically run weekly or monthly. You can even set the report to email to everyone in your subscription and/or directly to a client.

To get started, head to your Moz Pro Campaign and then click Custom Reports in the left-hand navigation menu. You can then select Create/Schedule PDF Report.

When creating the report, be sure to select the Start from Scratch Report option if you want the report to be exclusively related to brand mentions.

Follow the report setup flow and at the Add Modules step, be sure to add the Links > Opportunities module to the report.

If you’d like other Campaign data included in your report, you can add those modules at this time. However, if you are just looking to create a report for your unlinked mentions, you can proceed through the rest of the Custom Report setup flow.

Once your report is created, you can have it sent directly to your inbox so you can keep an eye on your mentions and identify link opportunities quickly.
